Contingency planning is defined as the course of action taken to help organizations navigate through events that may or may not happen. Contingency planning together with risk management, is the planning and application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability or impact of unfortunate event that may impact business processes.

With most organizations relying on computing platforms and data, safeguarding business-critical data and processes is paramount to the long term health of any organization. Contingency planning encompasses planning for events such as hacking, theft, sabotage, hardware failure and weather mitigation, to more complex and often overlooked events such as cloud and data center losses.
